Birds of the Falls of the Ohio
Seasons: W = winter (Dec. -Feb.); s = spring (Mar. - May);S = summer (June - July); F = fall (Aug. -Nov.)
Abundance: - = not recorded; o = occasional; r = rare, or not to be expected, but sometimes observed; u = uncommon, or often present, but can be hard to find; f = fairly common, or usually present, and observed most of the time; c = common, or usually numerous and should be observed. An asterisk (*) after the species names indicates breeding has been confirmed within the Falls of the Ohio area.
The area covered by this checklist includes the Falls of the Ohio, waters and shorelines of the Ohio River above and below McAlpine Dam, as well as islands in the immediate vicinity including Goose, Sand and Shippingport Islands. This follows the arrangement and Nomenclature of the American Ornithologists' Union Checklist, 7th ed. (1998) and subsequent supplements. Thanks are extended to members of the Beckham Bird Club for assisting in compilation. Last updated September 2007 (with the addition of accidental species as recently as July 2010).
Should you observe a species not noted on the checklist, please notify the staff at the Falls of the Ohio State Park via e-mail address below or call 812-280-9970.
Photos of bird species will be posted as we get them. Look for them in blue. Most (but not all) were taken at the Falls of the Ohio. Any sharp photos of birds on the list that we do not already have are welcome for consideration. Photographs should be from Indiana or Kentucky. Credit will be given, but the copyright for any images must be yours. Contact us at park@fallsoftheohio.org.
